Gemtec Pty Ltd, which began as a one-man wholesale gem merchant business, was established in 1971 by Maxwell Lane, a qualified gemmologist.
In the beginning, the business involved sourcing, processing and exporting Australian gemstones as well as importing overseas gemstones not found in Australia. Max’s vision for the new company was simple: To be the best and most reputable Australian company sourcing precious Australian gemstones for export. Gemtec achieved this goal by concentrating on selling quality rather than quantity.

Gemtec grew and evolved, experiencing major growth in the 1980’s when Gemtec began focusing solely in Australian Gemstones, including Queensland Boulder Opal, Black Opal from Lightning Ridge, Argyle diamonds and South Sea Pearls from Broome. Gemtec expanded to include mining, cutting and polishing, catering mainly to tourists and international visitors. Gemtec is recognised today as one of Australia’s largest opal and precious gem companies.
The merger of Gemtec and Cody Opals retail operations on 1st July, 2004 created the biggest opal seller in the country. The stores have become tourist attractions and a significant export earner and trade as the National Opal Collection (NOC), operating from 176 Pitt St Mall Sydney and 119 Swanston St Melbourne.
